The Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary when it kicks off on Sept. 2. Since it began in 1997, over a quarter-million audience members have seen the works of more than 10,000 performing artists in dance, theater, music and the visual arts. A number of prominent national and international artists and companies premiere new works each year, elevating what began as a simple off-beat event to a festival of worldwide stature.

Name three things that come to mind when you think of Delaware County in September. If you didn’t immediately think comedy, dance, or theater, you either just moved here or have yet to witness the sheer output of talent contributed to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival by Delco artists.

Dance

Five dance shows feature Delaware County troupes or residents, including Fringe regulars Music & Motion Dance Productions — now rebranded as MM2, a modern dance company from Drexel Hill. Led by Artistic Director Steven Weisz, this 10-year old group provides dance training and performance opportunities for college-age dancers.

This year, MM2 will present “Emergence,” whose theme will focus on complex patterns that can arise from individual behaviors—picture birds taking wing in flight, or dancers gliding across a stage. Either way, expect that Weisz’ troupe will continue to delight fringe audiences with the grace of poise of his company.

Delco artists gear up for Fringe Fest

For the 14th year, as summer wanes and September begins with back-to-school routines and shorter days, the annual Philadelphia Live Arts [Fringe] Festival arrives to offer a fresh jolt of energy to the Philadelphia arts scene. Although most of the Fringe events take place in downtown Philadelphia, a surprising number of Delaware County-based companies and artists are involved in the Festival. Here is a glance at some of this year’s Fringe shows that have a Delco-tie.

Although many of the Fringe Festival events require a trip into downtown Philadelphia, MM2 Modern Dance’s entry, Emergence, will be performed Saturday, Sept. 11 at 2:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center, 601 Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill.

This company, which has performed at the Philly Fringe for the past six years, under the direction of Steven Weisz,  utilizes the talents of college age and post-college dance majors.

The company had to receive special permission to bring their performance to Delaware County.

“I wanted to be able to bring this incredible experience to more people in the suburbs, who might not otherwise venture in to the city. The folks at the Fringe Festival were great in allowing us to extend their borders this year,” said Weisz.

Emergence explores, through movement and dance, the way complex systems and patterns arise out of relatively simple interactions.

Tickets are $15, and $10 for those under age 25.
