After a successful run in the recent Philly Fringe Festival, MM2 Modern Dance Company will bring to the Fringe Wilmington Festival, the Delaware premiere of ONE WORD, with shows on Friday, September 23rd at 7:45pm and Saturday, September 24th at 6:00 and 8:00pm. Performances will take place in the Baby Grand Theater located at 818 Market Street, Wilmington.
The Fringe Wilmington Festival is Delaware’s five-day celebration of unconventional and experimental art in the historic City of Wilmington, which includes performance, visuals arts, and cinema. It is a juried festival, in which a limited number of artists are chosen to present each year.
In creating this new work, each of the nine company members has choreographed pieces based on a single word. Artistic Director, Steven Weisz goes on to explain, “From the very beginning, when the first words were uttered, the ability to communicate has played a critical role in our world. Whether within our own thoughts, spoken or written, words have the power to transform the world we live in. “
Dancer and choreographer, Jessica Bryan adds “each member of the company, having selected their word is then set with the task of translating it in to movement. The word not only provides a framework for the choreographer but for the audience as well.”
Company member, Kaylee Goodwin elaborates, “For each of us, the word we have chosen has personal significance and meaning in our own lives. In essence, we are sharing our own stories with the audience. It is difficult to do, but putting yourself out there makes for a strong connection that we all share.”
Company member, Stephanie King choose as her word, “resilient” in honor of her grandmother, a four-year survivor of abdominal cancer. For Jessica Bryan, her word was “penitent” drawn from a personal situation where one might wish you could change the outcome. For Katelyn Capato, “Need” was created from her journey to India and the personal discoveries she made there.
The personal experiences of these dancers and the emotions they have portrayed through movement have touched audiences in the Delaware Valley as the company now looks to share these experiences at the Wilmington Fringe.
MM2 dancers, comprised mostly of dance majors and recent college graduates, are encouraged and given the opportunity to explore the choreographic process. As a result MM2 Dance has evolved as a leader in imaginative movement and creative collaboration, delivering positive, affirming and life-enriching experiences to audiences, through the medium of dance and movement, while also developing new dance fans by creating works of artistry that engage and motivate audiences.
This seasons dancers/choreographers are: Jessica Bryan, Katleyn Capato, Jenna Faye Eugenides, Heather Fleischman, Kaylee Goodwin, Shara Harad, Stephanie King and Brianne Scott. Special Guest appearance by Michael Nguyen and Anhthi “Maria” Nguyen. Original music composed and performed by Daniel Ison.
